Electro-rock band Metro Station has potential

09/27/07 - Hailing from Los Angeles, electro-rock band Metro Station has just released their very first self-entitled album, Metro Station.

Metro Station is a young band whose members have worked their way from measly mall jobs to having members of Motion City Soundtrack help produce their album, which was put out on record label, Red Ink.

Josh Cain and Justin Pierre, members of the popular Motion City Soundtrack produced two tracks on the album, as well as providing background vocals on the song, "Kelsey." Metro Station also teamed up with Sam Hollander and Dave Katz of Gym Class Heroes and Boys Like Girls. It's an impressive collaboration for a first record.

Vocalist Trace Cyrus, as the last name suggests is the son of Bill Ray Cyrus, but try not to hold it against him. He and fellow guitarist Mason Musso, who both have siblings starring on the popular Disney show Hannah Montana, were introduced after relocating to Hollywood. Soon after, they recruited keyboardist Blake Healy and drummer Anthony Improgo and formed Metro Station.

It has been featured in AP magazine and Teen Vogue and are soon to breakthrough with its electro-pop rock sound.

"Control" is the second song on the record. The synthesizer is a bit too heavy for my liking, but the lyrics are catchy. However, I find it ironic that the first few lines say, "I was taken/ but you were waiting/one more drink and I'm convinced" and these kids are barely even legal. The chorus on this song and the repetitive synth pretty much drives me insane. I don't like this song period.

One of the better songs on this album is, "Kelsey." It is the classic song of yearning and young love. The lyrics are cute, I don't think there is one girl who after listening to this song wouldn't wish this song had been written for her. Kelsey is a lucky girl.

"California" is undeniably a catchy song. This song sounds exactly like something Hellogoodbye would produce. It's a fun song but I can't lie- it's highly unoriginal.

Metro Station isn't bad but it's young and it's lyrics show it. I feel like I am a little too old to appreciate this album, but a crowd of 14-year-olds would be all over this band.

The final song, "Disco" absolutely drove me crazy! It was almost painful to force myself to listen to the whole thing to give it a fair chance. I hate the little adlibs in this song; for some reason I couldn't stand them. I think that's what ruined the song for me…you know, other than the crappy lyrics, of course.

If the bands Hellogoodbye and Motion City Soundtrack had a baby, Metro Station would be the end result. It's danceable and fun and that's pretty much all this entire album has to offer.

If you're into Boys Like Girls and Hellogoodbye you'll love this album. Otherwise you'll want to stab yourself in the ear with a sharp object; it would be less painful than sitting through these 10 tracks, only one of which is decent.

Cyrus has a good voice and it is a very young band. It has the potential to grow and develop. It's not bad - it's just not my musical taste.

I would, however, be interested in seeing it live … it's probably tons of fun.

Musso said, "We want our shows to be like giant parties," and I guess you can't go wrong with that motto. It will be touring with Motion City Soundtrack this fall, so check it out.

So, I will say this their shows can't be as awesome as hellogoodbye shows, there is no doubt that hellogoodbye has the best and biggest party at their show.
