Hellogoodbye headlined the UGBC fall concert, which 2,000 students attended Thursday night in Conte Forum. We The Living opened the show, drawing fans from the community.
Around 2,000 students crowded into Conte Forum Thursday night to say hello to Hellogoodbye, the headliner for the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) Fall Concert. Breaking the four-year fall concert drought, UGBC executive members said that early planning was key in making the show happen.
"It was fun to be part of the behind-the-scenes planning," said Jenniffer Castillo, UGBC president and A&S '08. Planning, she said, began back in May when the UGBC worked with the athletics department to pick dates for reserving Conte Forum. By overcoming this logistical difficulty encountered by past UGBC administrations, Castillo said, the fall concert was able to go from myth to reality.
But even after settling on two possible dates for the show, event planners then had to coordinate those dates with talent availability - a feat easier said than done. "We are given a list of bands said to be available in the fall," said Erica Reisenwitz, UGBC executive director of programming and A&S '08, "and we have to match their open dates to ours." The result is often a juggling act between two very restricted schedules, and Reisenwitz said the UGBC was lucky that an act came through.
"Hellogoodbye was our fourth official bid," she said. "They only accepted the offer 12 days before the concert. We were prepared to call it off if they didn't accept; we felt that four was a solid effort."
Other bands considered for the concert included Lifehouse, Regina Spektor, Phantom Planet, Matt Carney, and Ben Folds, all of which turned BC down for various scheduling-related reasons. "Ben Folds took a month to get back to us before deciding to go back into the studio," Reisenwitz said. "That set us back a bit. It was an example of artists being fickle because they can be."
But it seems students, like artists, can be fickle too. Despite the hype the fall concert received - or lack thereof - in the past, ticket sales were below what the UGBC had anticipated. "When we first announced the concert, it was very well received," said Alex Gerrish, UGBC assistant director of programming and CSOM '09. "Ticket sales were around 2,000 and we had hoped for 3,000. People were excited, but then they just didn't go."
