With the exciting US MySpace tour at it's end, the boys relax, play hometown Los Angeles/Anaheim, and take a break before jetting off to UK for their December tour. BandNation catch up with Forrest on his time off before the show for to share some tour memories and what is coming up for them. If you haven't had a chance to catch them at on their US tour, fret not because the boys are back in town for an after Christmas special on December 27th at Chain Reaction - Anaheim, CA.

Hi there, Can you introduce yourself/yourselves and what do you in the band?

My name is Forrest, I sing and play guitar!

First of all, congratulations on the success of your album and tour, excited for your Thanksgiving break?

Oh god yes. Well. No. its only two days and then we have to fly internationally out of lax (yuck!). buuut im sitting at home right now so i can't complain. It feels gooood.

You’re on the last leg of your US Myspace Tour at the moment with Say Anything and the Polysics, how has that been for you?

It’s been a blast. There’s been a real good energy on this tour. i think its cause we're surrounded by friends and its sort of our last hurrah till after we record, so you kinda make a point to enjoy it.

Are you excited about heading over to the UK?

Yes. I love lax. No, again it’s especially exciting since we know we won’t just be back there next month again, so I think we'll take advantage of the moment.

How is the fan response to your music over there and how does it differ from the States?

uhm, well. It’s newer over there sorta, the cd came out like a year later there than it came out here, so everyone is bright eyed and bushy tailed. and we roll in with Duncan, our English tour manager , and he kinda vouches for us.

Do you have a ‘greatest moment’ on tour experience you can share?

I do but I wouldn't share it for all the world. uhm, I threw a pumpkin up in there air and our other english friend, Andy, was drunk (he’s English) and kinda freaked out and ran under it and it fell on his back really hard. It was wonderful.

What has been your favorite place to play and visit so far?

I think San Francisco might have been the best show on this tour. oh but in general? uh we went to the Bahamas for a radio contest thing and that was pretty surreal... and Paris was pretty neat. I like the US west coast most though.

We checked out your photo journal and saw that you had made a studio from your garage recently – how’s that going now? All set up?

juuust about. I’ve got my gear in there... though I took most of it out to bring along on tour, and construction is all done... though I haven't installed the overhead lighting yet. but I’ve been jammin out and tracking a few things when I’ve been home, which has been obviously very infrequently. I can’t get my boy Jeff Turzo to come down and show me how to treat the acoustics of the room either, as much as I try. So things are a little bouncey in there till I do it riiight.

Though you’re signed with Drive-Thru, you still record all your own music for your record. How important do you feel it is to have that complete creative control and ability to produce from start to finish?

Very important because Richard and Stefanie from drive thru have terrible taste in everything. just kidding. I mean, I guess we come from a place where that kind of thing is just obligatory, and when you’re asked a question about it, it’s like... what? That’s something people think about? I think its cause we're punk.

What is the recording and writing process for you?

I guess usually I get a melody or a beat or a sound or a lyric or whatever and then I’ll start working on the computer, tracking it and repeating it and writing other parts around it, till it’s a full grown song.

What can we expect from your future album now that you’re all set up in your new garage studio?

Self indulgent songs that others won’t enjoy I guess. But i suuure will. mmmm.

Why the name : Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! ?

Sex appeal.

Do you have any favorite tracks on the album? And favorite tracks to play?

oh “it is love” is one of my faves i guess. me and Matt Mahaffey, who produced, did a sort of radio edit even though radio doesn't like it that I think might be even better. We added some tack piano played through a Leslie rotating speaker and more emo stuff that made it real sexy.

Gabrielle Donoff asks: Are the lyrics of your songs based on real experiences/ real girls?

yeah, all of them. I’m not very imaginative, but I am very creepy.

Nicole R asks: Do you guys ever get really nervous before you go on stage? If you do then what do you do back stage before the show to help get rid of the nervousness?

uhm, I don’t reeeeaallly get nervous too much anymore, I just get a little blood flowing and warm up my hands.

kris oooo asks: did you ever think you would get this big? Btw, your music is amazing

However big we are is definitely bigger than I ever imagined. What we started doing was just a silly little ruse.

Heather Lee asks:
(to Forrest) when are you going to hurry up and marry Chelsea?

She hasn't asked me yet, are you asking me now?

What is your Favorite Color?

I am big on green and orange (separately) right now. Powder blue and chocolate is always hawt.

KG: How did Hellogoodbye come together?

Forrest Kline: We were just in high school and I started recording music on a computer as a hobby. We just kind of got people together to play shows with songs we already had kind of after the fact. Then we kept playing shows.

KG: Did you ever think it would get as big as it did?

FK: No, we didn't have any plans like that. We just played on the weekends.

KG: Did you listen to Drive-Thru [Records] bands while growing up?

FK: A little bit when I was younger I listened to New Found Glory and the Starling Line, kind of.

KG: Did you ever think that you would be signed to the same label?

FK: No, we didn't plan on that.

KG: [Your song] "Oh, It is Love" being the theme song for MTV's "Engaged & Underage," was that big for you guys?

FK: I don't know how we think of it. It wasn't a big, crazy thing, but it's cool, you know.

KG: As far as music and lyric writing go, do you do it as a band or is it just you?

FK: No, it is mostly just me.

KG: How has the MySpace tour been going?

FK: It is going good. We have only played like seven shows. But it has been awesome.

KG: Has it been fun playing with Say Anything?

FK: It's cool to be doing a co-headline where we can flop back and forth.

KG: Last year on your headlining tour, you had a house-party atmosphere. Should we be expecting anything that crazy?

FK: We just have some lights…that glow.

KG: There won't be any futons?

FK: Ha ha. No.

KG: What about your favorite song to play live?

FK: It changes from night to night. Sometimes there are songs that can be your favorite and sometimes they can be your least favorite. I don't know exactly. Usually it's whatever the crowd likes.

KG: You guys are going back into the studio after this tour, aren't you? Is there anything we should be expecting, anything great coming out of your mastermind?

FK: I don't know. I have had a chance to work on a few things, but after this we are going to get some real time to hang out and do it. But I don't have a game plan.

KG: Just fly by the seat of your pants right?

FK: That's right.

KG: Do you have any words of wisdom to share with Mount students before you come and play here?

FK: No. Pay it forward.

The News Just Keeps Pouring IN!

MySpace Music Tour heads out

The first ever MySpace [ tickets ] Music Tour, co-headlined by alt-rockers Say Anything [ tickets ] and synth-pop outfit Hellogoodbye [ tickets ], kicked off last night (10/16) in Seattle and is scheduled to criss-cross the US into late November.
The trek, which continues tonight (10/17) in Portland, OR, also features electro-pop act Young Love and Japanese new-wave rock band Polysics. Since last check, dates have been added in Moon Township, PA, and Agoura Hills, CA. Details are listed below.

All four groups on the bill built a following through MySpace before finding success at radio, MTV or with a major label, according to the tour's MySpace page.

"It speaks to the power of Internet and how we discover music today," MySpace co-founder Tom Anderson said in a posting. "Things have really changed in the last four or five years; it's pretty easy to find great new bands, even if the guy at your local radio station is too lame to give them any spins."

Say Anything is supporting its sophomore set, "In Defense of the Genre," which is scheduled to drop next Tuesday (10/23). Four tracks from the two-disc album, including lead single "Baby Girl, I'm a Blur," are streaming at the band's MySpace page, which has logged more than 7 million profile views and upwards of 17 million plays, according to a press release.

Hellogoodbye continues to push its 2006 debut, "Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!," which includes songs from demos and previously released EPs. Singer Forrest Kline said the band can hardly believe how far it's come from playing the occasional live show in its hometown of Huntington Beach, CA.

"It's completely beyond anything we could comprehend," Kline told LiveDaily during a recent interview. "Two years ago, it was beyond anything we would have thought. We would just play shows at the local venue like once a month. That was the big time, beyond what was expected."

When the US tour wraps in Las Vegas Nov. 23, Say Anything and Hellogoodbye will cross the Pond for a run of UK shows.

Forrest Kline is not short of friends. He has 652,288 of them, according to his band's MySpace page.

The 23-year-old frontman of Californian power-pop act Hellogoodbye says the number is a touch unrealistic.

"Most of those people on MySpace are not my friends," he laughs. "Most of them are probably like internet robots or porn pages."

Kline and his bandmates arrive in Melbourne this week for their first Australian headlining tour. It follows a brief jaunt last year playing support to the All-American Rejects.

The band started in Kline's bedroom in 2001. The bespectacled singer was messing about writing synthesised punk-pop songs on his computer.

Attending Huntington Beach High School, he and buddy Jesse Kurvink aspired to make music simply for their friends.

Kline says: "I'd gotten a guitar when I was in the sixth grade and was always in little bands through high school. But it got more and more serious as I got older. We never sent the songs to record companies or anything; we just put them on the internet."

The band's name (taken from the Beatles song Hello, Goodbye) raised eyebrows and helped it get on the bill for numerous local support slots. Soon, they were in a perpetual motion of touring.

"The first tour we did, we were pretty much stupid kids who didn't know what they were doing," Kline admits.

"Most of the bands that played with us were rolling their eyes at us. But I liked playing support. There's less pressure. If the crowd shows the slightest clue of enjoyment, you're stoked. You'll come off and say, 'They bopped their heads! That was awesome!' "

Line-up issues (they shed four drummers and three bass players) and a crippling tour schedule meant the band struggled to put time aside to record an album.

After signing with Drive-Thru, they finally blacked out a couple of months and headed to Los Angeles. In two sessions split over six weeks, they recorded and tracked what would become their debut, Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! The electro-pop sound (think Jimmy Eat World meets XTC) found a niche in the US power-pop scene.

In between, the band had been featured on the MTV program Real World: Austin. The show saw them followed around South by Southwest by a team of MTV-picked contestants aiming to market the band to the US music industry. The ensuing exposure helped land the band heavy airplay on MTV and a top 10 US single, Here (In Your Arms).

Still, Kline is eager to downplay the series' impact on the band's popularity.

"Look, it's hard to quantify what it meant for us," he says, wearily. "It definitely exposed us to a group of people that would not know who we are at all. I'd like to think that doing so much touring and playing with so many different bands has helped just as much."
